water time on Tuesday

I am participating in an art tag swap and the theme is "under the sea".  For inspiration I went to the shores of Lake Michigan yesterday and floated about.  I had a bag of random art stuff along with a journal.  Packed a sandwich and my floaty.    Plopped my butt in the sand, took out my journal, dug through my bag to find out my tools were really random!  oh well, it is an adventure day anyway!  Just did a little sketch - then went out and bobbed around in the water for quite awhile - just soaking up the day!  Came back to my journal - added some colored pencil then some watercolor - using lake water, of course.

I am going to keep going with this - too much fun to just leave as is...then onto my tag project.

So as I was leaving town to head home...I had to get a photo of this incredible house...it is THE perfect Practical Magic house!  Don't you agree???

Once at home the sun was shining through the most beautiful spider web.  A day filled with beauty and inspiration!

SUNDAY SKETCHES & PAY IT FORWARD ART

Last year I participated in a pay it forward project.  You sent something that had to be home-made... didn't matter if it was art, or food, or clothing.  I received a beautiful package and I had sent out a hand-knitted headband with felted flower to my recipient.  Soooooooooo, when my artist friend Mark Doepker posted a pay it forward art project I immediately signed up!

I posted on my FB page as instructed and a friend signed up.  Chrissy (my now recipient) and her husband Tony took a long awaited honeymoon this past December.  They went to my favorite place, Key West.  I knew right away that whatever I did would have some Key West in it.  My muse took over and the perfect image came to mind.  I have hundreds of rooster pics from our trips to Key West.  The symbol of the island. I had a special rooster I photographed from this last trip and wanted to use him.  The painting had to be bright as that is how the island is!

I drew my picture and then set to work.  I used watersoluble Caran D'Ache wax pastels ( love how these feel - like you are spreading butter) for the blue background - mixing blue turquoise with cobalt blue.  Outlined the KW with black acrylic paint - sharpied in my writing within the KW.  Everything I put in there is symbolic of the island - had to include Captain Tony's for obvious reasons - and then included honeymoon Dec. 2012.  I used watercolors -  orange and yellow to fill in the letters and wow everything was popping - just like I had it in my head.  I was afraid to complete the rooster for fear of wrecking the whole painting. (things don't usually come out like they are in my head)
used dark brown for matting instead of black, it really made a difference

After a couple days of staring at it...I sucked it up and put the brush to paper.  I completed the rooster using watercolors and then sharpie for some definition and a little white gel pen for some pop.  I hope Chrissy and Tony love this as much as I do.
a raw rough frame captures the island flavor

Thanks to Alexandra for hosting Sunday Sketches - now to finish my labels for the postcard swap!

FINALLY... THE BEAK

the beak in all its glory

journal page
I can't believe it has taken 6 days of trying to post 2 pics.  One I got to work Monday and this morning after several attempts... here is the full look at my journal.  Man, I need help with this computer.  I can't tell if it's me or it!  Okay,  talked with AT&T tech support, it is a combo....asked them to come over and give me lessons BUT tech support is in India.  So much for what I thought was still an American Company.

I want to share another artist's finished work that she too has had hanging around to complete and did!  If you have followed me for anytime at all you know I have a quilting artist friend, Joy!  For my birthday she gave me the most incredible quilt.  It is sooooooooooo me!  She had found these fabrics a few years ago and I had asked her to make me a quilt.  So - it took awhile as things worth waiting for always do- and she depicted me perfectly!  This quilt is Dana all the way through.  I will treasure this forever!

Click on it to enlarge so you can see the stitching.  People on the beach having fun in the sun.  No, I don't do bikinis on the beach but I am all about the Florida Keys!  Margarita's in the sand and pink flamingos!

Sharing with Paint Party Friday - it's been awhile and not much painting here lately but I am trying to get back in the groove!!!  I love browsing through all the incredible work here whether I have participated or not!  Thanks to Eva and Kristin for keeping it all going on!!!!

Sunday Sketches and some Paint on my brushes

wow - it seems so long ago that I actually had my first love in paints - watercolors - out!  Some of my blogland friends are participating in 10 paintings in 10 days...I would love too BUT know myself well enough to know better!  I would just get frustrated and feel badly about not getting the task done.  My schedule really doesn't work well for such a commitment.  I decided to maybe try to dabble for 10 days - get some unfinished business taken care of!  So first up, a journal page (http://sinderella-studio.blogspot.com/2012/06/ss-and-dont-miss-moment.html ) I started while taking an e-course with Lisa Wright!  She posted a parrot named Rodney ( of course, I can't find the original photo she showed us) but I had started this painting in my moleskin journal without completing it so........................ today.................RODNEY!
watercolors and sharpie marker
I did the other page also as I was fasinated with the original picture focusing in on his beak!  I am unable to download the pic for whatever reason.  I have had to shut down my computer and spent 2 days trying to get Rodney's pic up.  Missed Sunday Sketches altogether.  FRUSTRATED!!!!

Hopefully will get figured out.  I am some great stuff to share from artists' friends!!!!

Busy Week and must complete a piece of work...

for an upcoming raffle prize.  It gets my name and work out there, who knows!  Have started a canvas and plan on making it see thru-ish rusty looking with - well you'll just have to stay tuned...You know how you have something in your head and it doesn't always come out on the canvas?!?!

So this weekend went to the Mid-Ohio race course with my husband while he worked.  I haven't been to one of his races in a few years so it was alot of fun.  Saw a few friends and while the 2 hour and 45 min race was running - I watched some and sketched some.. only took my basic water color palette - you know with only 7 colors, my waterbrush and a pitt pen...
so my flower is pretty flat but I like the leaves.  It was a great way to relax in all the heat!  Their car went off into the gravel so kind of fell behind, finished forth which was really good all things considered.
My husband hard at work!!!  Team RSR !!! in ALMS racing
The team was disappointed having just come off a win at Mosport 2 weeks ago.  Onto Road America!!!
Thanks to Alexandra for hosting Sunday Sketches - so happy to hear she is feeling better and has a break in her crazy schedule!!!  Stop and visit all the great work at SS !!!

Giveaway winner is... & Phoenicopterus, of course!

IN MY HAST TO FINISH THE FLAMINGO....I TOTALLY FORGOT TO ANNOUNCE THE WINNER OF THE GIVEAWAY...OMG.  YES, I THINK I AM GETTING MEMORY ISSUES AS I AGE.
BUT THE WINNER IS NORA CLEMENS-GALLO !!!!
HER WORK IS BEAUTIFUL AND I HOPE SHE ENJOYS THIS BOOK!!!

I finally finished my ATC to send to Minnemie!  As, I am sure you read in her interview last week, she grew up in South Africa.  She loves to paint animals of her native country.  Although I am not as skilled at it as she is - for our trade I decided to do a Phoenicopterus!!!!  I am working on a large comissioned painting of a FLAMINGO and discovered in my research that they are native to South Africa too!  Wha-la!!!!  My subject matter for our trade.  Minnemie sent me this incredible elephant which I posted upon receipt and now I am fulfilling my end of the trade!

Wednesday,  I discovered that she too, is a chocolate lover...I knew we were kindred spirits and this seals the deal...we both are tomboys that are want to be princess's!!!!  She is surrounded by boys...I have 3 brothers, 2 sons, and a boat load of nephews and now 4 grandsons!!!...no girls around early in life but now - 2 step-daughters, 3 neices, a daughter-in-law, 3 granddaughters!!! Talk about princess-ville!  So how could I not do a PINK Flamingo!

So here is my Phoenicopterus:

Hope everyone stops by to see all the Paint Party Friday participants!!!  A great place for inspiration and knowledge!
Thanks to Eva and Kristin for hosting!!!!!  Can't wait to read about this weeks artist!

round 2 with the Angel....

Well, my WWII vet DID NOT LIKE THE ANGEL I DID, AT ALL!!!  "That is not what I asked for, I want a real map with an angel - Angels are WHITE!!!"  He was rude and it was hard to stand there and take it.  So, thank goodness for being part of Lisa Wright's Messy Book group - even though I hadn't worked in my book  yet.  I have had to work 6 days a week for a couple weeks and life has just been to busy.  But with that in mind I was able to buck up... took my angel to the sink and poured my cup of coffee out on top of it!  I  then took it outside and stomped it into the dirt.

The trainee I was working with thought I had lost my mind.  I really didn't say anything.  Took the painting back outside and left it in the pouring rain.  As I was leaving work I ran it over a couple times and then put it in my car.  So, at the DEMANDS of my WWII vet, I redid the painting on a map with a WHITE ANGEL.  If he doesn't like this one, I am done.  I can't believe someone would be so rude when you are doing something for free.  He said all you artists' think you have the right to interpret what is being asked of you  - well heck yay, if you wanted a still life then take a photo for me to copy!!!

Anyway, here is the new version.  So my sweet 89 yr old vet has a mean streak that he didn't show when asking for me to do this and letting me know how poor he is.  Lesson learned!!!!

now, off to pour some dirt into my Accidental Mess Book so I can contribute to the group!

HELP...please from all you paint party friday-er's

okay - so I have been working on my bicycle girl painting...I decided to do a pitt pen outline and was pretty happy with the way she came out THEN...I could not get going on the rest of it and NOW have a muddied up mess...
Should I cut her out and put her on something...should I just start anew...can I and with what theme could I collage around her???????????????????????
All your suggestions are appreciated!!!

she's an American Girl
What about cutting her out and putting her on newsprint...then putting some rolled up newspapers in her basket????  I do need to darken her hair a bit...somehow I make everyone blonde...

As always it will take me most of the week to get to visit all...I keep missing a few but keep trying to check in with all!  Thanks to Kristen and Eva for hosting such a helpful and inspiration day of the week!!!!  Be sure to check out all the art at Paint Party Friday!

cheers, dana
ps - I hope the majority suggested cutting her out and doing something because that is what I just did! We'll see what happens!
I know I'm writing this on Thursday but Friday's are my early day at work and I just miss it if I don't get it done early.
p.s.s. check out my new profile pic on facebook!!!!

Paint Party Friday and back on track

Well, it has been a couple weeks of busy life choas and no time to paint or post.  Did take a minute to sketch a seen on my deck...my garden is really pots of herbs and flowers to attract hummingbirds.  We have to much sand to really get anything to grow in the ground.  I love flamingo's and have one of my many in a pot of chives.
Makes me smile...so yesterday while watching the big orange ball of sun come up over the tree line, sipping my coffee; I sketched my peaceful deck...later was able to add marker, watercolor and a dab of acrylic...
a "peace" of my garden
So in honor of getting back on track, into the groove and Paint Party Friday ...I would like to give away a  "peace" of  inspiration.  Leave a comment here today or a post I will do Sunday and Monday and this book could be yours...
Kelly Rae Roberts, Taking Flight.  It is one of my favorite books to flip through while drinking my morning coffee...so for all us coffee lovers, dreamers, artists at any level....hope you put your name in the cup.  Yes, cup, as my coffee time is my time I am putting all the names into one of my favorite morning cups and next Friday will pull a name and send the book on its way.
Have a safe and fun holiday weekend for Labor Day and hope you get to Art today!
cheers, dana
thanks to Kristin and Eva for hosting Paint Party Friday
P.S. I think my dad really liked his barn...or was it he was afraid to critique?!?

sunday sketches and one wore out Grams!!!

Well, 9 weeks of babysitting step-daughters Newfinland (huge harry) dog...2 weekends in there with multiple grandkids for the weekend (as parents had outings)...3 days of sons lab (hyper harry large) dog, a couple open houses, a wedding and my 8 yr old granddaughter here for her solo birthday visit with grams...and I am toast.  Our house is choas and I don't know where to start to put it all back together.  Carpets and furniture get cleaned Tuesday...that will make me feel better.  In the midst of all this still recovering from the Scrapfest and my solo Fl-art (flash art mob - yes, of one).  So, Cloee (granddaughter) and I did a non-stop shop, eat, art weekend.  She helped me tie up my Faerie Shoe swap project...can't show because it is not in the mail yet...still drying.  Cloee did a project of her own (with alittle help from ideas on Kristin Dudish's blog) and I did my Sunday Sketch... aren't you tired too, just from reading this??? lol  Anyways, life is short so better to be exhausted and with the ones you love than sitting on the sofa moaning about the heat!
Cloee absolutely loved going through some of the Paint Party Friday's with me ... she couldn't believe all the GREAT artwork and was amazed that grams "knows" all these artists...thanks everyone for making me look so worldly!!!!  She is excited to have her work posted on Sunday Sketches...thanks Sophia for hosting!

I will, as usual, be late getting to view everyone's work but will be hopping around later today and into the week.  Off  now to have breakfast with Great Grandpa so Cloee can spend sometime and then drop her off with her mom at church...another full speed ahead day!!!!
meeting of the minds!!!!
A journal page: coated the page with white acrylic then did sketch and used watercolor paint/pencils...sharpie markers.

Sunday Sketches...memories...and thanks....

People we love grow old,
we watch them lose some of their spark.
At first we refuse to see they are aging,
sometimes frustrated with their change of person.

Ray (who we lost a few years ago) & Tillie (at 95 has just been
diagnosed with a serious medical issue)  Thank you from the
bottom of my heart - you mean sooooo much to me

We soon realize the fading is real,
and our towers of strength are becoming weak.
It's sad and scary for us and them,
realizing our losses and them that endings are near.

Look up and remember there are those who wait for them.
Loving arms open with wings in hand.
With heavy heart we eventually say good-bye,
and on their memories, lessons, and love we rely.

with love and respect, dana

You may have seen this before on my blog, it is a painting I did in honor of Ray & Tillie's, what would have been 75th anniversary last year. Ray had passed a few years earlier.

it is STILL friday...although kind of late...

Well tomorrow my baby boy gets married!  Rehersal dinner was great... we were all sweating as it was in the mid-80's...outdoor ceremony.  Guess what, tomorrow's forecast is a high of 58 and rainy... please everyone chant for rain after 5 pm.  Ceremony is at 3pm.

The setting is beautiful and everyone is all so grown up.  I love watching my youngest with his brother and all his cousins' in the wedding party.  They have all grown up together and are best friends... does it get any better.  All the little ones look adoreable and yes, I have my kleenex ready - a gift to me from the mother of the bride.

I just can't wait for tomorrow when everyone is all decked out... the bride and her girls will be goregous because they always are!  And, the men....so handsome...the little guys in tuxedo's!  Seriously fantastic!  I love being a mom and grandma!!!!

I so planned on showing my painting on the hand made paper but it won't be seen until tomorrow - the morning of the wedding so, I will be posting this to Friday's Paint Party super early Saturday morning!  Just want to make sure no one sees it before it gets to the wedding site.  Yes, I am sure they have more important things to do than follow my blog right now, BUT you never know.
Thanks to Kristin and Eva for hosting Paint Party Friday!!!

Okay, it is after midnight, I think everyone has other things going on besides this....

The mother of the bride asked me to do a painting... Chelsea (bride to be) had seen a print of a tree you could order framed. Then you have the wedding guest  stamp their fingerprints as leaves and blossoms. Her mom thought it would be more meaning ful if I painted it! Yikes, are you kidding me!

So, here it is before going to the framers. Carved in the tree are the bride and groom's names. The date of the wedding and the initials of their two boys!!!

Each guest will be asked to stamp their finger in either blossom pink or spring leaf green to add growth to the wedding tree.  Their is one print already on it as Mark's daughter is leaving for Brazil for 9 weeks and will miss the wedding.  I will post again on Sunday Sketches the tree after the wedding!!!  I hope they like it!

Have a great weekend...see you Sunday!
cheers, dana

Wedding Week...

So, I have been unable to keep up with the Artful Diva journaling a painting/sketch a day for May following the prompt word....But I have been able to keep up with checking on her keeping up with the daily challenge.  Great fun following her month!  Check her out!
This is the weekend of my son's wedding - so I plan on getting back to more attention to my art when this weekend is over...THE BIG NEWS ON THE ART FRONT IS THAT OUR TEAM HAS BEEN ACCEPTED TO PARTICIPATE IN SCRAPFEST 2011!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Happy happy - OMG omg!!! now what?????  Hope you follow our progress as I post.... It all begins June 11th with a frantic run through a scrapyard for one hour for our materials for the build... I have never done metal - scultping - welding - not sure how this all came together but our leader is confident!!!!!!!!!!!  Thank God someone is!!!!

Trying to sift through some projects as I have plans for my first spring/summer Artists' by the lake show coming up shortly after ScrapFest 2011 so...  as you know I struggle with value and this painting I did last year...but lacks value/deepth...I have decided to add to it next week...we'll see what happens.
I know that I am supposed to work with the paint and let it dry before moving onto the next step BUT am the most impatient person soooooooooooo don't do real well with that step.  As I worked on my all important project with the handmade paper I shared with you - I had to do alittle at a time...yes, I had to let the paint dry before moving onto my next tiny space on the paper...it was a great lesson for me!  I am proud of how the piece came out - no, not a masterpiece by degreed professional artists' but for me... a true accomplishment.  I didn't sit down and try to do the whole thing in one sitting.... it took me a couple weeks inbetween work and all to actually finish it - as simple as it is... I will be sharing at this weeks
Paint Party Friday.  It is a gift to my son and his wife to be!

Happy Wednesday...make art, make friends - share art, share souls!!!

Wednesday works...

Trying to keep art in the forefront in everyday craziness... so Pat at The Artful Diva is doing a great challenge!  Everyday in May there is a prompt and you create - she has put together a beautiful sketchbook for her participation in the challenge.  I am not up to the official commitment so am being a wimp and following her along as I can.  The first of May was soap and the 2nd was plug... as I am actually trying to complete a sketchbook too, I am putting what I do for this into my moleskin.  With the help from another blog inspiration, Deanna a blog friend from Sunday Sketches - I purchased a super cheap set of pan paint watercolors - she is right - they are so easy to use - so I CAN DO SOME QUICK watercolor work!!!  Thanks Deanna!

Sunday Sketches...In Orb-it!!!

As my busy world is spinning, so much going on!  Work is busy, babysat last night and that was busy!  Nothing like a seven year old and 3 year old to keep you hopping - great fun!  Grandpa, Jackson and Neva!

Wedding only 2 weeks away - Mothers Day in-between...yikes!  So to sooth my soul I did a journal page in soft blues - layered watercolor spheres/orbs...it was a glazing exercise in one of my books.  As I looked at the page I felt like getting inside one of the orbs and just traveling around viewing everything from an outside perspective... taking in all that life has to offer... so many smiles!

In Orb-it
Used my sharpie fine point markers to color in the butterfly!  I love these markers for quick fun.  No fuss- no mess, so can get my art-fix quick!   My special project is at the framers...can't wait to share soon.

Make art, make friends - share art, share souls!!!  thanks to Sophia for sharing this site each Sunday...Sunday Sketches

I am really still here...hello Sunday Sketches...

It seems that each day that I am not working is filled - end to end.  Busy getting ready for my youngest son's wedding in just 3 weeks - need to try the dress on that I bought several pounds ago...and I don't mean pounds down.  Bridal shower, babysitting grandkids so adults could go to the parties for bride and groom...buying a new bike for this season... Harley Sportster (picking her up today) ...getting my current bike on line for sale (86 Honda 450 Rebel super great first bike) and, oh yes, going to WORK everyday!!!
I have also been working on a special project that I can't share at this time but will in a few weeks...
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... today, I thought I better post before you all think I went off into la-la land.  I have an artist friend taking a class and she was telling me that her assignment was to do an abstract... YIKES was my thought.  After so many things going on and no time to paint, I thought, why not try an abstract journal page???  Seriously, why not??? So, for Sunday Sketches I will share my page!!!  Thanks to Sophia for hosting... I have learned so much from all the artists' that share their work on her site!!!

Wikipedia says this about abstract art : Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.[1] Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.

With this in mind, and that I have been doing exercises from some of my art books trying to understand techniques with layering better... I decided to combine some of my practice to this page.  So, I have been putting paint to paper for the last few weeks... just doing random exercises from books... I want to get better but don't have a schedule that allows me to take a formal class as I would like.  You do what you can and keep moving forward!  Not exactly what I invisioned but at least I tried it!

rain on my window
Rain on my window... it has been raining and raining and oh yes, did I mention raining... here in Michigan.  I love sitting in one of my chairs by a window that looks out into our side yard every morning sipping my coffee in complete silence and darkness... it was raining the other (most) morning and was really quite pleasant just listening to the taps on the window and watching all the drops turn into drips.  So, not sure if this qualifies as a true abstract but it is for me!!!  I will post it in the sketchbook challenge for April, theme is branching out, and this was definitely me branching out into an unknown direction.

Just for fun, another look, thanks to Kristin Dudish for sharing dumpr.net

A sneak peek at the paper I am currently working on... I love it!!!

please click to enlarge...it is wonderful to look at and run your hands across its surface!

Happy Easter to everyone - don't eat too many jelly beans!!!

SUNDAY SKETCHES...

GOOD MORNING SUNDAY SKETCHES!!!  Well, I posted this journal page about 10 days ago - in process, then done but not - didn't really like it SO (and this is one of the things I LOVE ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST - you can throw it away, start over or just keep messing around with what you've got) I followed Darlene's suggestion from A Dancing Mango...

flight to freedom...
added color to the wings - glitter - and words that fit the journey.  I am at least satisfied enough to now turn the page and move on!!!  Thanks to Sophia (her dad still in our thoughts) for hosting Sunday Sketches, this site has had the BIGGEST impact on my motivation to keep striving to get better!!!  I love all the work that shows up here - a truly talented group of people that encourage and inspire!

I am also working on something new using watercolor canvas - not sure I like how the canvas takes the paint but here is the start...

I hope to have this completed by Friday - or will post its progress - for the kick off of Paint Party Friday hosted by Kristin Dudish and Eva (both Sunday Sketches participants) - check it out, should be fun!

For those of you that just stop in on Sunday's, I'd like to share a re-posting of my most recent depiction of "Spilling Over" for the March Sketchbook Challenge... this is another site that makes me think and stretch!

Democracy spilling over worldwide
I feel for all people fighting for human rights... I also am watching in shock with all that is happening in Japan.  People everywhere with struggles I can't imagine.  I am truly blessed and grateful.
Be sure to MAKE ART - MAKE FRIENDS / SHARE ART - SHARE SOULS this week!!!  Send someone you haven't talked to in awhile a piece you create... the idea is miles of smiles across our country!
cheers, dana

Okay it's Tuesday... reporting in on 5 of 5 and more sketchbook challenge

This is my serious depiction of spilling over for the March theme at Sketchbook Challenge...
DEMOCRACY spilling over world wide!!!

This is a serious issue in our world, I believe in the freedoms we have as AMERICANS!!!  When I watch the news reports I THANK GOD I'M AN AMERICAN IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!
I wish all these people, of the many different countries - safety and success!!!!

Now, I am not as happy with my dragonfly that I started last week... I think I shall leave it in the journal and actually write on it... what do you think?
flight to freedom
As I was working on my 5 daily committments... I fell slightly (sigh) short.  I managed four of four in four of seven days.  As I was working on this...I realized everyday is a big task.. but I managed four - the working on my piles daily kind of fell off the list.  BUT, I made up for it on Monday (I was off work - yay) and seriously tackled my studio (remember I am using artist terms so it is no longer my artroom).  It is amazing how much progress I made - I am very happy with some of my new organization and I think it counts toward the 5 of 5 seeing it took ALL DAY.  I am trying to get rid of things I keep hanging onto BUT I could NOT toss out my wine corks...
one of three boxes... I need them, I know I do
It is all about progress right?  Do you have something you just can't let go of???? Even though to others they appear useless! I need them is my battle cry!!!!
Have a great week - and yep, I am going to try to keep the 5 of 5 alive this week!
cheers, dana
